Why we built HardHatHQ
The trades are one of the most real career paths out there. So why is it so hard to get a straight answer about them?
We went looking, and the information was a mess
This started simple. We wanted to understand the skilled trades, really understand them, and the deeper we looked the more tangled it got. How long does it actually take to become a welder? What does an electrician make in year one versus year ten? Which path gets you there fastest, and what does it cost? The answers were scattered, vague, or buried.
Someone we know wanted to become a welder. Listening to them try to map out the steps, it was clear that even the basics were not laid out anywhere clearly. And the more we talked to people actually in the trades, the more we heard about specializations we had never heard of, entire well-paid niches within welding or electrical work that almost nobody outside the industry knows exist.
If it was this hard for people actively trying to figure it out, no wonder so many never seriously consider the trades at all.
The good information was boring. The interesting sites were thin.
The accurate data mostly lives on government sites that are dry, dated, and hard to navigate. The sites that looked more approachable were either too light to be useful or felt abandoned, like nobody had touched them in years.
Nobody had taken the real numbers and made them clear, modern, and actually worth reading. That gap is the whole reason this exists.
What HardHatHQ does differently
We do two things, and we take both seriously.
We tell it straight. No hype, no sales pitch, no pretending every trade is perfect for everyone. When a trade is physically hard, we say so. When demand is shrinking, we show the real number instead of softening it. You can make a good decision only if the information is honest.
We back it with real data. Every salary figure, growth projection, and demand rating on this site comes from real sources, primarily the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and we cite them so you can check the work yourself. If we cannot source a number, we do not use it.
That is the whole promise. Real information about real careers, presented like it actually matters.
